Chapter Twelve

“Heaven knows I would like to oblige, sir.” Mrs. Billings was at her very stiffest. “But the young man will not undress himself, and I do not have the strength to force him to disrobe. I have requested aid from your manservant, Mr. Farley, but he stated that he would not bathe any unwilling subject.”

Gerard hid the smile. Mrs. Billings didn’t need to see his amusement. He put down his book. “Very well. You have locked the young man in the bathroom?”

“Sir, yes. He is extremely quiet,” she added darkly. “In my experience when young people are too quiet, they are plotting mischief. Perhaps we should send word to Mr. Kenway. He has had the most success with the young…man.”

Gerard, who’d been trying to relax with a novel and ignore the shouting coming from the upper story, got to his feet. He had not been mooning about, thinking of Kenway, and he also refused to pay heed to his suddenly elated mood. “Yes. I recall he offered to help. Send Joey off to find Mr. Kenway.”

She gave a dignified nod and strode from the study, the keys at her waist jingling in a determined fashion.

Just a day ago, he’d posed by that fireplace, nervous as a student facing his first examination. He’d be calmer today, though the thought of what they’d done together gave him a shiver of anticipatory pleasure.

But after almost half an hour, when Mrs. Billings didn’t reappear, he went in search of her. And when he heard the soft deep voice drifting down the back stairway, he froze.

Of course Mrs. Billings would take care of the situation and not disturb him again. She’d fetch Mr. Kenway to do the work she required, which was not stopping in to visit with the master. He walked up the stairs quietly to investigate.
